Watch: 'Chaotic scenes' at site of Spain's deadly train crash A high-speed train crash has killed at least 68 people and injured dozens more in central Spain. It occurred when a train travelling from Madrid to Seville barrelled into another train - which was stationary on the tracks - on Wednesday morning. The force saw several carriages fall down an embankment. The transport minister said a computer failure followed by human error caused the crash, which is one of the worst in Europe's modern history, and Spain's deadliest train disaster in 13 years. Survivors described harrowing scenes of passengers being thrown into the air, trapped in the wreckage and smashing windows to get out.

Survivor describes being onboard when trains collided It was approaching 08:30 (07:30 GMT) on a normal Wednesday. Two high-speed trains were travelling south from the Spanish capital, Madrid, to Seville. One, run by state-owned operator Renfe had 397 passengers on board. Ahead of it on the same line was a train of Iryo private operator with 147 passengers. A reported issue with the automatic signalling system - a computer failure - had forced all trains to halt on the affected stretch. Then the impossible happened, Spain's transport minister said, as the Renfe train was ordered to proceed in "error". It crashed into the back of the other train between municipalities Mora and Orgaz, about 140km (87 miles) south of Madrid.

Watch: Has Flávio Bolsonaro fled Brazil to evade justice? Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who landed in Miami after losing the presidential election on Sunday, has said it was never his intention to "leave my homeland". "I did not flee Brazil; I left for the sake of Brazil," he said in his first statement since his departure. The US provided visas to him and his family after Brazil cancelled his passports as part of a criminal investigation. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump told reporters: "We gave him a pass to come into the country". Newly re-elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has criticised Bolsonaro's secretive exit from the country, saying "those who have nothing to hide have nothing to fear".

Israel's election result is messy - here's why Partial results from Israel's general election show veteran Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is leading his rival, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, but is still short of a majority in parliament. With 85% of ballots counted, Netanyahu's Likud party and its far-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies were on track to win 53 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. Eisenkot's Yashar party and three other Jewish opposition parties in his bloc were set for 48. Both leaders have said they will try to form a governing coalition. Arab-led parties, who are on course to win an unprecedented 19 seats, could emerge as kingmakers, but all but one of the Jewish parties have pledged not to work with them.

With 85% of votes counted after Tuesday's election, neither the incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition, nor the bloc of his key challenger Gadi Eisenkot look set to win a majority. In order to form a government, it looks likely one of the leading parties would have to break their campaign promises - meaning the most probable outcome may well be new elections. Here are four possible scenarios.

Technology giant Microsoft says its profits for the three months to the end of September jumped to more than $36.6bn (£27.5bn), just days after announcing plans to cut its workforce by more than a quarter. On Monday, the Windows developer said it would offer buyouts to around 60,000 of its workers to cut costs as it pours billions of dollars into artificial intelligence (AI). Like other tech firms, Microsoft is investing heavily in the infrastructure that powers AI even as questions remain over whether such huge spending will pay off. Microsoft shares rose by almost 2.9% in after hours trading in New York on Wednesday. The recent financial results of tech companies have been closely watched by investors as they gauge whether the heavy spending on AI is sustainable.

Details of more than 41,000 personnel working for the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including thousands involved in immigration enforcement, have been leaked to the public. The leak includes names, work addresses and phone numbers of DHS staff, including agents working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection, along with descriptions of the work they do for each agency. Wednesday's leak marks the third time in recent weeks a government agency has been targeted by leaks or hacks. A representative of the DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The seemingly unprecedented breach of employee information was put online on Wednesday by a group called the Department of Peace alongside cybersecurity researcher and hacker maia crimew.

Elon Musk is a "real genius", Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday after revealing the two are in "close" contact about satellite technology. The remarks came during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, during which Putin discussed Russia's own satellite internet project Rassvet, which provides internet connections to people from satellites. "He's a genius, a real genius," Putin said of Musk, according to a translation of his remarks by the BBC. "We are in close contact with our American partners, including Mr. Musk." Starlink is part of Musk's company SpaceX. The company did not respond to a request for comment. Putin added that it was important for Russia to be in contact with Musk so Rassvet and Starlink satellites do not "interfere with each other in orbit".

Apple has acknowledged some of its iPhone Duo handsets have developed problems with their screens, just days after the highly-anticipated smartphone went on sale. Photos posted on social media show lines that appeared on the screens of the technology giant's first ever foldable device, which has a starting price of £1,999 ($2,668) in the UK. Apple said it was aware of "an issue impacting the inner display on a small number" of the phones and urged affected users to contact the company for a replacement. The Duo's launch, which attracted crowds at Apple stores around the world last week, is an attempt to reinvigorate the brand's device range and challenge the foldable phones made by rivals. Some Duo owners also posted photos online showing cracks along the screen's centre crease, while others reported a crunching noise when opening the device.

A luxury cruise ship on a years-long voyage around the world said it suspended operations due to extraordinarily high fuel costs, leaving passengers stranded in Cambodia. The US-based operator of the Villa Vie Odyssey said it was working with passengers on disembarkation plans and "temporary living arrangements". It is unclear how many were on board but the nearly 200m (656ft) vessel can carry up to 650 passengers. It departed Belfast in October 2024 for a "continuous voyage around the world". Global fuel prices have soared since the Iran war started earlier this year. The ship's operator said the monthly fuel cost per cabin in parts of Asia has risen to as much as $8,000 (£6,000) from $1,800. Villa Vie Residences said it had taken "significant steps to reduce fuel consumption, including slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port". But those measures turned out to be insufficient to "offset the extraordinary increase in fuel costs".

Official data released in the last week, external show the ratio of China's dependent elderly people compared to the working age population rose to 23% last year, overtaking the figure for children, which stood at 22%. The numbers are closely watched for signs of how China's shrinking workforce will impact both the world's second largest economy and global growth as a whole. The latest figures mark a significant milestone as China grapples with an ageing population that could have implications for families, pensions and healthcare spending, analysts say. China has been preparing for a growing proportion of elderly people in recent years, while urging younger generations to get married and for couples to have more children. The latest data from China's National Bureau of Statistics show there are now more than 223 million people in China aged 65 and above, accounting for nearly 16% of the country's total population.

For much of the past year, India-China relations appeared to be on a cautious path to recovery. The two countries have seen ups and downs in their ties over decades - especially over the disputed Himalayan frontier. But events of the past few days suggest that the thaw which has followed their most recent clashes in 2020 may be more fragile than it seems. The latest concerns began when India's border police chief said Chinese troops had returned to disputed areas along the Himalayan frontier in large numbers earlier this year, pitching tents several kilometres inside territory claimed by India. The remarks by Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, director general of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), have triggered a political controversy in Delhi.

Kylian Mbappé has apologised for "ill-judged" comments he made about late Chinese leader Mao Zedong which led to him being dropped by several Chinese brands. The meme is part of a running joke about the Real Madrid forward being called a "dictator" because of his huge influence in football. "My comment was ill-judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world," Mbappé said in a statement. "I apologise to everyone my words have upset." Spain's La Liga also apologised, saying it "deeply regrets the offence that Kylian Mbappé's recent comments have caused among Chinese fans".
